SYNOPSIS: Provides details of Irish Missionary Rev. J. L. Porter's travels through the holy lands. Porter was sent to Damascus in 1849 by the Irish Presbyterian Church as a missionary to the Jews, and over the next ten years he traveled extensively throughout Syria and Palestine. He revisted the country in the 1860's. In the present work he argued that the massive buildings, whose ruins are found in Bashan, were constructed by the aboriginal inhabitants long before the occupation by Jewish tribes.

Format: Green leather bound boards with gold lettering.

Condition:
Volume: Acceptable as a reading copy. Covers loose, heavily soiled pages. Inscription written in elegant fountain pen by previous owner of apparent Welsh descent, "G. Irving Davies: Given me by my daughter can't read name) on her return from Madeira, May ast, 1867." Also indication where it was originally purchased: "Kerby and Sons, 190 Oxford Street" on inside front cover, both written in pencil on dark brown board paper as well as very tiny bookshop sticker. P
ages extremely yellowed and some darkened with age, some indications of past water staining. Most of the Illustrations have tissue protectors. This is a very fragile edition, but would be a great addition to a ministerial library, and that's where this edition had been housed for the past century and a half. Numerous photos will illustrate condition.
