SYNOPSIS:  503 pages.

"The time is 1789, and the central character young Dr. John Adam Fyfe of Edinburgh, recently arrived to settle in New York City. Hounded by a series of misfortunes (including a stretch in the notorious debtors' prison, Bridewell), he is unexpectedly rescued by a former patient, General-now-President Washington, who sends him to the wild Alabama River Country as physician/ambassador to the disease-ridden Alexander McGilivray, the fabulous but little-known emperor of the fierce Creeks. Plots and counterplots, involving Spain, England, the Creeks and assorted adventurers (including one of the gaudiest of America's authentic villains, William Augustus Bowles), have long kept the area in turmoil. When bloody violence seems inevitable, Fyfe and his seductive half-breed companion, Annalie, flee to Philadelphia and unwittingly to a gruesome climax played against the background of terror and death that was the yellow-fever scourge of 1793."
